Discover Genk

There are plenty of lovely sights and fun group activities to enjoy here!

At C-mine, for example, you can opt for the C-mine Expedition, an immersive journey through the ventilation system of the old mine, followed by a Virtual Reality tour to round off the experience. You’ll be transported back to the 1950s for a lifelike visit to the Winterslag mine.

Alternatively, at C-mine, you can opt for the guided tour When the Mine Was Still Alive, which combines a visit to the underground C-mine Expedition with an above-ground tour of the main building. This tour brings the past and present together in a fascinating way, from personal stories and heritage to a surprising journey of discovery through the mine site.

There’s also plenty to do at Thor Park, another of Genk’s former mining sites!

There, for example, you can visit the Mijndepot. This is a non-profit organisation run by former miners from Waterschei. They offer guided tours of their mining museum and are happy to share their own experiences of the mine.

If you’d like more information about this activity or wish to book, please contact info@mijndepot.be or call 089 73 18 34.

If you’d like to find out more about the history of Genk’s town centre, you can opt for the interactive, guided city walk Centrumgeheimen.

Or you could choose to visit Labiomista, a large park featuring artworks by Koen Vanmechelen, heritage sites and nature. Universal social issues such as diversity and human rights become tangible and open to discussion thanks to the language of art.

Astronomy enthusiasts can visit Kattevennen, the Cosmodrome, for a journey through the universe. You can take part in one of the 360° shows, a space adventure in the Cosmodrome’s 360° cinema.

Or you could visit the open-air museum in Bokrijk. The museum takes you back to how people used to live, with a rich collection of historic buildings and artefacts. In Bokrijk, you can also enjoy lovely walks, such as in the Arboretum, an 18-hectare woodland with a unique collection of plants, trees and shrubs.
